“Love All. Have compassion for all beings”

Kwan Yin/Guan Yin/Quan Yin is the Goddess of Compassion, showing up throughout Southeast Asia across traditions. She is often depicted riding a dragon, emerging from the sea.

I have a deep resonance with her, and with the energy of compassion. Compassion is so important and so fundamental to me. Without it, the moment anyone did anything "wrong" or unhealthy, they'd be cast out and alone forever. With it, we can heal our past trauma, see the humanity in a person who is hurting, validate and honor the experiences of others.

We all have our flaws and we are all human. It is an easier, lesser, weaker energy to condemn those who are suffering. It takes courage, strength, and an open heart to choose the more difficult option: compassion. Compassion comes from a place of love and nurturing. It is unconditional, yet it is not unconditional love.

So I say to Love the haters, Love the destroyers, the ignorant, the arrogant, the abusers, Love the poison, have compassion for the darkness and suffering they experience. You don't have to share their values to have love and compassion for them. You don't have to share their suffering. But the love you share might be enough to show them a better way. To help stop the cycles of abuse, oppression, hate, and violence.

Compassion is beautiful. It allows people to be okay with themselves, to know they are not abandoned. It allows those who are suffering to begin healing. What a gift. What a blessing one can bestow upon someone. You never know, you might be that unstable junkie yelling at the 7-11 trashcan one day. And that lady covered in track-marks and grime could become a defense lawyer one day. Compassion makes all the difference to those in need.

I'm sending my compassion out to Portland's homeless right now. To the people of the world who are struggling with isolation and depression, who have lost loved ones, who are down and out. To the world itself. To myself. To you.
